Why I Blog
February 16th, 2007 by Matthew Jabs
I’ve been wanting to write on this topic and have recently found the motivation from Chris at Blog-Op. Chris was inspired after reading David Airey’s ‘Five Reasons Why I Blog’. I too will remain consistent to the Five Reasons standard.
People often ask me, “What’s your motivation to keep eJabs up & running?“; so I figured I’d post it here for all of you to enjoy and critique. This will actually help me to review why I started, where I’m at, and where I’m heading. If you’re a fellow blogger, then I encourage you to do the same. If you’re not blogging, but are interested in why I do this…then please, read on as well.
- Having a low-cost platform to widely distribute the information I believe in, is one of the best things about blogging. This website cost me $94 for the first two years of operation. It has already paid for itself, so I basically have a free, far-reaching podium from which to send all my thoughts, feelings, and beliefs whizzing through the world to affect whomever God see’s fit! Tell me that’s not initiative in itself!
- I’m a straight-shooter, so I’m going to be completely honest & let you know that one of the top reasons for creating eJabs, is to generate a passive-income stream for myself and my family. I’m an entrepreneur at heart, and believe the blogosphere to be (currently) my best shot (per my abilities, experience, and interests) at creating passive income.
- I enjoy computers, the Internet, etc. and have always been intrigued by web-development. Running this blog gives me an opportunity to delve into these technologies, and broaden my realm of IT experience. Specifically, since I spend most of my “computer time” administering networks, troubleshooting and solving network/PC issues, the web-dev side of things (being a new arena for me) gives my brain something fresh to focus on and explore.
- Blogging provides me with great new opportunities. It has inducted me into an entirely new social realm; one I never would have experienced had I not entered the blogosphere. I truly enjoy communicating and interacting with fellow bloggers, learning from them, and gaining experience. I have made quite a few friends, as well as professional contacts just from blogging! You won’t believe the positive benefits in this particular area until you experience them for yourself.
- Lastly, but certainly not least importantly, writing every day, though challenging, exposes me to a ton of information I would normally never come across. Each day I read books, other blogs, news, etc. trying to find new things to share with you. This adds to my education, experience, and marketability.

Some day I will be a professional blogger. My goals not only include blogging itself, but I’d also like to see it open opportunities for speaking and possibly lead me to become a published writer. Who knows where it will take me, but blogging is definitely taking me!
If you’re a blogger, again, I encourage you to post on this same topic. It will help put things in perspective, help ensure you’re staying your course, or help you define a course if you are yet without one.
I hope you’ve enjoyed reading my reasons for blogging, and I hope that they have benefited you in some way. As always, thanks for reading, and have a great day!

Great post Matthew & thanks for the linkage.
I subscribe to all of those reasons as well, but you’ve put them better than I ever could
On an unrelated note, is it a conscious decision of yours to only provide a partial feed? I’m with Darren Rowse on this issue, and if I hadn’t got into your blog before subscribing, it may have put me off coming back. I have deleted partial feeds before, as I find them a bit annoying. Be interested to hear your thoughts on this one.
Thanks very much for the link. Keep up the good blogging
