Simply Successful Secrets

April 12th, 2007 by Matthew Jabs

Recently I was tagged by Christy of Christy’s Coffee Break to compile and list my Simply Successful Secrets. This meme was started by Aaron Potts of Today Is That Day.

I am always trying to adopt new habits that can help to make me more successful, but I find that sticking with them is the really tough part. What do they say again??? You have to do something 30 times daily before it becomes a habit, or something like that. Anyway…here are the things I have currently implemented (or am implementing) into my days to help me be more successful.

  1. Compartmentalize my money - This is different than budgeting, it is actually about training yourself to think differently about your money. I wrote a post about it here and was inspired by Brian Lee here.
  2. Carry a Treo - If I didn’t carry some type of planner I would be the guy that you’re always pissed at. In college I tried carrying a paper planner, but I was always forgetting it, or I just didn’t feel like hauling it around. Then I started using a Palm Pilot, but found that I didn’t want to haul that around in addition to my cell phone. Enter the Treo 600 Palm. When I bought this device over 3 years ago, I really made a great investment. Now I use it religiously to help me remember where I’m supposed to be, and what I’m supposed to be doing. My 2 year Verizon…get a discounted phone…thing is up, so I can upgrade at a discount if I want. I’m think I’ll soon be making the jump to the Treo 750…it’s bad!
  3. Eat healthy - Whenever possible I try to buy my produce from vendors that provide an organic option. Also, I don’t buy highly processed foods. I try to stick to whole wheats, whole grains, and food made from scratch. It’s much healthier and it’s much better. If you can make the necessary preparations, it doesn’t really take much more time either!
  4. Read - I try to read something every day. Be it a book, an informative publication, or just a good ole blog, I try to ingest positive information daily. It helps me to formulate new ideas, helps to keep my mind sharp, but most importantly, it helps me win at Jeopardy!
  5. Commune with Jesus Christ - Regardless of what modern day Humanists may tell you, the only ways to communicate with God in our current world, are through prayer (meditation) and Scripture. God talks to us through His Word and through prayer, and we talk to Him through the same. This is the basis of my life, the root of my happiness & stability, and reason for life itself.
  6. Exercise - Although you don’t have to be some kind of health freak, you should get out and do some type of physical activity every day. Even if you’re just taking a walk with the man/woman you love (Man for you BlogPaul ;-)) anything is better than sitting on your butt watching TV.
  7. Develop Passive Income Streams - For about six months now I have been trying to focus some of my energy on developing passive income streams. Things that I put a lot of work into initially, but in turn, they yield me revolving income with little interaction. This blog you’re reading is one of my attempts at this goal.
  8. Contact Friends & Family - Though I don’t do this enough, I try to make time to call my friends and family as often as possible, just to let them know I love them, see how their lives are going, and to see if there is anything I can do for them.

I hope you have enjoyed reading my list, I also hope it has benefited you in some way. If it has, please consider leaving me a tip!

Now for the fun part…I get to tag whomever I want to do this meme! Okay, here goes…I tag the following:

That’s a long list, but it will produce some very good advice since everyone listed is a contact and friend of mine.

Enjoy!

I’m not particularly successful, and I have no secrets.

Help?

I guess I’m quite simple….

Tony??? You did???

I did a search on everybody’s blog looking for this meme before I tagged them!

Okay…I just did a more intensive search and I found it. For those of you who want to read Tony’s post on this subject, here it is.

Thanks Tony

Thanks for the tag, Matt, but I’m declining on this one. Perhaps I’ll be ready for it in a year or so, but not right now.

Matthew,

I appreciate you sharing your Simply Successful Secrets with us - you’ve got some great habits.

I hear you about the Treo. I do not have one yet because I am waiting for “THE ONE” that really does it for me, but since I work at home, my laptop is my Treo. If I go more than a few hours without at least scanning email, I start getting jittery! :)

I’ll have to go back and look at the list, but I think you might be the first person who listed actually contacting friends and family, which surprises me. Many people (including me) listed “family time,” but that does not cover contacting friends and family who are not part of your normal day to day life.

That’s great advice, Matthew, and thank you so much for sharing it. Even if no one else lists that, I will make sure it makes it to the master list that I am compiling from all of the participants.

Thanks again!

[...] Aaron Potts over at Today Is That Day kicked off a pretty cool meme a little over a month ago. He shared with the world a list of habits he has that he feels contribute to his success. He then “tagged” several other bloggers and challenged them to do the same. Last week I was “tagged” by Matthew Jabs over at eJabs. [...]
