My Favorite Unpopular Posts - Meme
May 14th, 2007 by Matthew Jabs
The “My Favorite Unpopular Posts” meme is born!
Background: A couple of nights ago, a friend & I were reading through the eJabs archives. It wasn’t too long before I started to notice that a lot of my favorite posts, never seemed to get the traffic I felt they deserved. Although some of my “popular” posts were enjoyable & meant a lot to me, the majority of my favorite posts seemed largely neglected (from a traffic standpoint). Even though there is an excellent plugin for our most popular posts, our favorite posts often vanish after a few days of low traffic.
To combat this, Matt over at eJabs has started this “My Favorite Unpopular Posts” meme.
Here’s how it works: As a blog author, you’ve undoubtedly written a few posts you were very proud of, although the posts themselves may have went largely unnoticed in the blogosphere. Well here’s your chance to make your favorite posts noticed again. All you have to do is read through your archives, find your top 10 favorite unpopular posts, and list them here. I’m also going to include 5 posts as honorable mentions. Once you’ve listed them, simply tag as many of your favorite bloggers as you’d like to do the same! That’s it. Now for the list (in no particular order):
- Blame The Public School System!
- Why the Racial Titles?
- Roadkill For Dinner
- Webster’s 1828 Dictionary
- Make your own healthy homemade baby food
- Innovative Spice Racks
- How Many Parents Do You Have?
- How to (motivate yourself to) quit smoking
- 20 Random Chuck Norris Facts
- How To Automate Your cPanel Website & Database Backups
Honorable Mention:
- Subscribe To Comments debate
- Office Dares (how to stay sane at work)
- The best blanket ever - The Slanket!
- Don’t Poop in my Food!
- Income From Blogging versus Income From Saving
There you have it folks…My Favorite Unpopular Posts meme! Now to tag some of my favorite bloggers to do the same!
- Chris of Blog-Op
- Paul of BlogPaul
- Coach of Can’t Coach That
- Brian of GeniusTypes
- Maki of Dosh Dosh
- Ilker of The Thinking Blog
- Garry of Garry Conn
- Ray of FreshBlogger
- RT of UntwistedVortex
- Darren of Problogger
- Samm of OrganicParade

- Lorna of WebGrrrl
- Steve of Steve Pavlina
- Matthew of BlogAboutYourBlog

Cheers Matt, I’ve had similar thoughts myself.
I’ll have a root through the leftovers
lol…okay, let me know & I’ll be there reading & commenting.

Great idea.. I also thought of making a post of my unpopular posts.
But - I believe there is a reason why those posts are unpopular.. though I need to figure out why!
finished my post
yeah…I’ve read it & gone through almost all 10. Thanks again for the link & I hope the meme gives a little more love to some of your favorite unpopular posts!
It would be much better to go look at 5 blogs you read regularly, and pick one post on their blog that you think deserved more attention.
This meme is just creating a long chain of people pointing to top level domains which is fairly worthless link or traffic benefit.
[...] pm I’m going to experiment with a new concept. I got this idea from RT (who attributes it to Matthew). So starting from now, I’m going back in time and will pick some of my older articles and [...]
Andy, I think the point is that’s exactly not what this is about.
This is about highlighting one’s *own* posts from the past which hasn’t caught the attention of other bloggers.
I personally think it’s a great idea, although I’ve adapted it slightly differently (using the concept of “best of the [insert month and year here]“) as a series of highlights rather than in a single post.
lol…thanks Andy, but it’s not ALL about SEO!
Hari is right. This it just to highlight some of my favorite posts so that my readers can check them out again, all in one spot.
Thanks Hari!
I agree it is not purely SEO, and I do empathise with the reason for it (why I use the Tumbleweed plugin, and do roundup posts and deep linking all the time)
SEO is all about improving user experience and bringing the best content to the foreground.
Almost all the memes that have recently sprung up are one directional, in that if you start at the tail end, you gain some connectivity, but if you start at the head, such as your list here, there is no connection in theme.
Hey Andy…
Thanks again for your input. I do visit your blog to learn more about SEO, but don’t claim to be 1/10th of the expert you are on the matter, so thanks for the advice.
Mostly, it was just a rant about some of the posts that I’ve written that were very important to me (or I just plain liked them), that I wanted to reintroduce to spark some comments & feedback. The meme isn’t meant to boost my link rate, although I’m sure it will a little.
I’ve heard other bloggers write on this subject so I thought I’d help out by giving them a reason to feature their favorite posts. I’m sure you understand that.
I understand the importance of SEO, but I don’t think it’s everybody’s intention to boost SEO ratings on their site.
Personally I don’t want better SEO because I want a limited presence online. I don’t even try to get a lot of backlinks myself for that reason.
I prefer a decent obscurity to popularity (or notoriety)

I kinda side with hari on the limited obscurity but who am I kidding.. I look at the stats more often that I should.
