My First NASCAR Race

August 20th, 2007 by Matthew Jabs

Well, after 19 hours of straight & steady rain, my first NASCAR experience still wasn’t a total flop.  I did attend the Busch Series race on Saturday, but the Sunday race (Nextel Cup) was rained out.  The race was rescheduled for today (Monday), but was also rained out.  It has now been scheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday) at 10am.  If it is rained out tomorrow the race will be rescheduled for November.  Although I’m hoping that is what happens, it’s not looking good.  It’s not supposed to rain until 6pm tomorrow so the race will probably take place.  If it did get rescheduled to November, I’d be able to get the days off work & still attend the race.

The tickets were $80, and have now gone to waste.  I recently started a new job so I can’t take the day off to go back down tomorrow because I have to work.

Although I didn’t get to go to the big race, I still had a great time.  The event as a whole was very impressive.  The stands hold over 150,000 people and there are probably another 50,000 outside buying merchandise at all the driver specific semi-trailers.  My sister is a big NASCAR fan, so she wanted me to root for her driver, Denny Hamlin.  I did just that for the Busch Series race & he ended up winning!  That was pretty cool.  I ended up buying a Denny hat & t-shirt before the race so that made me look pretty cool.

Another thing to note is the amount of people camping at all the campgrounds around the track.  I would estimate there was about  10,000 RV’s parked in the small Michigan town of Brooklyn this past weekend!  The amount of following NASCAR has was amazing to me.  I was interested to learn that NASCAR races are the biggest sporting event in the world!  The events draw even more fans than the huge soccer games that take place around the world!

Even though I’m not a NASCAR fan, it will now always hold a special place in my heart.  I’ll always be checking to see who won & will always be looking for what place Denny Hamlin took!  All in all I think it’s an experience that everyone should have at least once; and I didn’t even get to see the Big Race (the Nextel Cup race).

Have you ever been to a NASCAR race?  Are you a NASCAR fan?  Who’s your favorite driver?
